Hello Big Brother fans! K-Baller here and I’m ready to recap the first episode of the season. So, I thought last night was a great opener to the greatest TV show ever! It was everything I was hoping for and more. I was a little worried that my anticipation for this season was going to leave me disappointed. But when the clock hit 8, Big Brother certainly pulled through!
With the game in full force, I already have strong opinions about some of the houseguests. And I think the idea of returning to the roots of the game, going back to the classic Big Brother format with no twists, was a great idea. It was nice to see a fresh batch of houseguests. 13 complete strangers ready to play, and as always, left expecting the unexpected. And although there might not be any plans for any major twists this season, I’m sure there will be plenty of turns!
So on to the recap!
As 13 new houseguests take a good look at each other for the very first time, the game suddenly begins as the Chenbot clues them in that they all must vote on their first HOH before entering the house. They all seemed nervous, yet anxious to start the game. What seems to be a strategy of letting “ma and pa” take care of their “children,” the younger folks gave the HOH to 75 year-old Jerry, while 53 year-old Renny came in a close second place.
In true Big Brother fashion, the houseguests filed into their new summer home in groups of four and five. Finally able to speak, the houseguests quickly got to know each other (or at least who they think each other are). Renny quickly got on everyone’s last nerve with her unfiltered mouth letting everyone know she is definitely not your typical mother. But I like Renny. As some houseguest pointed out, she definitely spends a lot of time hanging out in left field. But I find her both extremely interesting, and definitely entertaining!
As the first luxury competition started, the youngest (and most irritating in my opinion) of the group, 22 year-old bodybuilder Jessie volunteered to sit out, allowing for the rest of the house to form into two even teams. After Jessie sacrificed himself, claiming he didn’t want his muscles to intimidate the house, the houseguest realized they would be playing for either a 1969 Camaro or a 1966 Mustang, both in mint condition! Disappointed Jessie was forced to sit in the car, but not able to drive it home. But this wasn’t just a luxury competition. The houseguests were also playing for food! Just by the look on ALL their faces, if the game didn’t sink in with the HOH vote, the game certainly was about to begin now! Memphis the “Mixologist” (dude, you’re a bartender so just deal with it already!) ended up going home with the Camaro, despite Steve doing all the work for his team. This left Keesha, Brian, Libra, Ollie, and April all on slop for the week. Jerry, also on the losing team, lucked out by winning the first HOH. And because of his good deed (or fear, which I think might be more accurate), Jessie sitting out got him a slop free week as well.
The first alliance started to form as who I believe to be the two sneakiest houseguests so far began to make promises to one another. Brian and Dan came together, hoping they could become the first powerhouse of this seasons Big Brother house. They quickly decided that Ollie was needed to make the alliance stronger, and faster than Julie Chen can say “Hello housegusts,” the first alliance was now official. However, I don’t see this one lasting. The first rule in Big Brother is to never start an alliance on the first day. This didn’t work out for Kail, Mike, and Zach in season 8 and I just don’t see it working with these three either. First, I think Brian and Dan are so full of themselves that they will undoubtedly fail at forming any true relationships with anyone else in the house. I think Ollie will wise up and realize who these two truly are, and the big G-O-D will guide him to a better alliance. At least I hope so, for his sake. In addition, Brian is already playing the “make friends with the HOH” card, trying to manipulate Jerry into putting up who he, not Jerry, believes should go home. But don’t let Jerry’s age fool you. He is a smart cookie. And he is a Marine and a Korean War veteran. Who do these two snakes think they are dealing with?
As the first day winded down and the houseguests started turning out the lights and jumping into bed, Renny was wide awake and certainly not afraid to let the whole house know. Now, many might assume April was cast to play the stereotypical dumb blonde role. However, I disagree with that. I think Renny by far has the least amount of common sense in the house. Believing Big Brother locked her and her roommates into their bedrooms, she began to shout thinking she was unable to open the bedroom door. Concerned himself (but lets be honest, not too concerned), Steven got up to assist Renny. And with very little effort, Steven opened the door, sending Renny into a fit of laughter, which seemed to really push the buttons of Mr. Muscle Man, Jessie. Now awake, Jessie was not a happy camper, whining about the “cackle” coming from Renny’s room (Renny, guilty as charged!). Mr. Muscle Man whimpered his complaints to Renny, causing the first Big Brother rivalry to occur. My opinion- Jessie is a child! It’s the first night! Hang out and enjoy this new experience you have been privileged with. Your muscles need to get used to this new lifestyle. It will be okay. I promise. Or will it?
As the episode came to a close, Jerry had a big task ahead of him. To my regret, he followed Brian’s orders by putting up Renny and (not so regretfully) Jessie. But Jerry did this with his own agenda, hoping the two would blame each other for their nomination, leaving Jerry clear of all charges. And it actually worked! But who knows what lies ahead. The game has only begun and we still have a bunch of houseguests who have yet to let their true colors shine. I’m sure April’s OCD, Libra’s love for Obama, and (if she last through the week) Renny’s crazy ways will surely leave us wondering just what to expect next.
But the question of the day is, will the nominations stay the same? Will the power of veto be used to take either Renny or Jessie off the block?
